Residence RV: With the way the world is going these days, there has never been a better time to escape from your neighborhood and get out on the open road. What if you’re wanting to get away for a longer period of time than you have before? Perhaps you’ve decided to get out on the road permanently. If you are looking to make your RV your home, there are some things you need to know.
Depending on the state you live in, you have different rules that apply to having an RV as a permanent residence. For example, some states do not allow you to claim an RV as your permanent home if you have an auto loan rather than a mortgage. In other states, your RV has to be a particular size before you can claim it as a home. Other states specify that you must have certain amenities in your RV–such as a kitchen and a bathroom–before you can claim it as your primary residence. Be sure and check the rules in your state.
There are other rules you need to think about as well. For example, if you are going to park your RV for any length of time, you will need to make sure your state allows you to park in a neighborhood. There also may be HOA rules that don’t allow parking in a neighborhood or a subdivision. One thing you may not have thought of is that houses tend to appreciate in value, but RVs decrease in value over time.
